Probably the best known association with the hawthorn is the legend of the Holy Grail. Joseph of Arimathea was a tin merchant who traded with miners on the west coast of Britain. On one of his journeys he brought along his nephew, the boy Jesus and together they made a pilgrimage to the Holy Isle of Avalon. Years later, it's said that he returned to Avalon bringing the Holy Grail with him. When he stepped ashore, he planted his staff in the ground where it took root and blossomed into a hawthorn tree, known today as the Glastonbury Thorn or Holy Hawthorn.

The Glastonbury Thorn was noteworthy because it flowered twice in a year, once in the late Spring which is normal, but also once after the harshness of midwinter has passed. The original Glastonbury Thorn itself was cut down and burned as a relic of superstition by Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil War.
