Sacred cats kept in a sanctuary in ancient Egypt were carefully tended by priests who watched them day and night. The priests interpreted the cat's movements into a prediction of future events and it was once believed that the life-giving rays of the sun were kept in a cat's eyes at night for safekeeping.

Bastet, the Goddess of Love, Fertility and Joy was represented as a cat in Egyptian mythology as cats were sacred to Bastet, a sun goddess who represented the warm, life giving power of the sun.
