In the Renaissance and later in the Baroque age the heart on a coat of arms stood for eternal faithfulness and courage.

In Roman times and even up to the 1500’s, the word Valentine meant the name of a person picked from a box to be your sweetheart. Around 1533, it became a folded piece of paper with the sweetheart’s name on it. By 1610, it had become the gift, given to that special person and by 1824 it had become the poem, letter or verse to a sweetheart that we know today.

Although Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th, it originates from the Roman celebration called Lupercalia – a fertility festival held on the February 15th
