Cats can forecast the weather, they predict the wind by clawing at carpets and curtains and rain is highly likely when a cat busily washes its ears.
The dog, an attendant of the Norse storm king Odin, was a symbol of wind and cats came to symbolise down-pouring rain; this may be where the phrase "it's raining cats and dogs" originated. According to Arabian legend, cats were created when Noah's ark became infested with rats. Noah commanded the lion to sneeze and out came a cat!
Traits associated with cats include cleverness, unpredictability, healing and witchcraft.
Cats express feminine qualities and represent the positive, creative and sensuous aspects of femininity. They were associated with the old pagan fertility gods, were a symbol of the Earth Mother and represented the power and wisdom of nature. Cats were sacred to the Egyptians as custodians of the souls of the dead. Only with the advent of Christianity were they deemed to be the evil familiar of witches.
A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three he stays. - English proverb
